The Grand Canyon University Men's Rugby team finally shared the pitch again with another school after a year of waiting.
The rust from the long wait showed as the University of Arizona took control from the outset, defeating the Lopes, 63-20, at William Sitton Field in Tucson Friday night.
"There wasn't really a pivotal moment in the game," said Lopes' Inside Centre Royce Fisher. "We had multiple small critical errors that Arizona took advantage of. Despite having multiple opportunities, we were unable to capitalize inside Arizona's 22."
The loss added to the Lopes' five year losing streak against the Wildcats.
Although the Lopes struggled early, they halted all Arizona attacks during the final 10 minutes of the game.
"Our best moments of the match came during the final minutes," said Fisher. "Our team showed a lot of determination and dominated the end of the game."
Despite a disappointing loss, the Lopes focused on the positives as they prepare for their rematch with Arizona on April 2 at the GCU Practice Soccer Field at 7 pm.
"Our scrums and lineouts were strengths that we will look to continue when we face them again," said Fisher. "We will continue to play for each other, and the rest will take care of itself."
