GCU Men’s Club Basketball off to blazing start

Clutch 2-point victory over Justice College puts Lopes at 11-1

Out for revenge.

Following a 2021-2022 campaign where they narrowly fell to the University of Wisconsin in the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association National Championship game to finish 22-5, GCU Men's Club Basketball Team 1 picked up right where they left off, going 11-1 to open the regular season.

Their most recent victory came by way of a clutch last-second bucket to give them a 59-57 win over rival Justice College Green. The gamewinner from 6'6" freshman Tate Nachtigal sealed a double-digit comeback and forced Justice College to heave an errant shot towards the hoop as time expired.

GCU's comeback in the second half was fueled by a flurry of three-point shots, a few of which were dropped in by senior sharpshooter Mason Petersen, who caught fire often in the 2022 NIRSA Spring Championship Tournament. Lopes' freshman point guard Max Kachman also added a pair of clutch shots in the final minutes to help seal the win.

GCU returns to action for their 2023 spring season on January 24, facing off against Bella Vista Prep in the GCU Canyon Activity Center at 7:30PM.
