History repeats itself.
The
Grand Canyon University Men's Rugby team closed out their regular season with a victory over San Diego State University, adding another notch to Lopes' undefeated streak against the Aztecs, 6-0 overall.
The first half was dominated by the Lopes with 6 different GCU players crossing the try line. The Lopes' red shirt senior
Damon McCaskill found the try zone first, only seven minutes into the start of the match. Just five minutes later, the Lopes'
Sam Muter and
Caleb Peavy crossed the try line to increase the lead to 19 points.
The relentless attack never faltered as the Lopes'
Reece Prefontaine,
Isaac Browning, and
Jared Tavares combined for another 21 unanswered points before the half was over, extending the lead to 40-0.
The Lopes continued to control the pitch in the second half as GCU's
Caleb Peavy scored his second try of the night. After the Lopes' junior
Lotu Pulu crossed the try line, GCU held a 50-point lead over SDSU.
After nearly 70 minutes of play, the Aztecs finally crossed the try line, but their excitement was short-lived as Lopes' sophomore
Josh Peavy sealed the victory with a try of his own. SDSU found the try line one last time in the final minutes of the game but fell to the Lopes 57-12.
The Lopes end their 2021-22 regular season with a 7-3-1 record.
