GCU Women’s Rugby Claims PDRC Playoffs Championship

Lopes punch in spot at regionals next weekend

Save us a spot.

In a matchup that happened 24 hours earlier than expected, the Grand Canyon University Women's Rugby team defeated University of California Los Angeles, 31-3, in the championship match of the Pacific Desert Rugby Conference Playoffs Saturday at the GCU Soccer Stadium. GCU's decisive victory over the Bruins not only crowned the Lopes champions, but secured them a spot at the PDRC Regionals this coming weekend at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.

This sweet victory was ultimately the product of the squad's diligent preparation.

"Our regular season ended early compared to the other teams in the conference," said Lopes' Head Coach Lindsey Mahoney. "We have not played a full rugby game in over a month, so the girls were hungry and eager to go into this game and execute what we have been training."

The excitement showed as the Lopes took the field, but it was not until nearly 20 minutes into the first half that GCU claimed the first try of the game. The Lopes then secured two more tries in the first half to take a 19-0 lead at the half.

"We have been able to incorporate more and more into our attack," said Mahoney. "The girls have picked it up so easily and quickly. This game was certainly a showcase of everything we learned throughout the season."

The Bruins were not ready to throw in the towel, and just five minutes into the second half, they spoiled GCU's shutout with a penalty kick. Undeterred, the Lopes' defense allowed no more Bruin additions to the scoreboard, while continuing to dominate the offensive side of the ball. Five different Lopes scored tries in the win.

"This is our first normal year after dealing with restrictions from the pandemic," said Mahoney. "We came out looking even stronger than we did before. I am so proud of all my current sophomores. They have persevered so much over the last year, and trusted the coaches and the process."

The Lopes will be back in action this Friday for CRAA Regionals at Stanford University, where they will play the host Cardinal in the first round at 1 PM.
