The Lopes won't go down without a fight.
The Grand Canyon University Bowling teams traveled to Iowa for the Collegiate Club Championships where the
Lopes' Women's team walked away with a 7
th-place finish and the
Lopes' Men's team finished 13
th.
This was the first tournament the Lopes' Women's team had competed in
since January 29.
"We expected we would need to shake some rust off going into the tournament," said
Lopes' Head Coach Ben Canfield. "This was also the first time for many of them traveling this far for a bowling event."
The women left pool play with a 3-3 record, placing them against the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the first round of their double elimination bracket.
"We knew going in that anyone can beat anyone," said Canfield. "Although we lost to UWM, the team average was higher than what we had in the qualifying bracket."
That was the momentum the team would need as they faced the No. 1 seed, Wright State University, in the first round of the best-of-three Contender's Bracket. The Lopes started hot with a clean game, leaving no open frames and scoring the first point. The Lopes took Game 2 as well to eliminate WSU.
"It was a big stage, but they held their own," said Canfield. "It truly was a great moment to be a part of, and watch our girls take down one of the best teams in the country."
Despite riding the momentum from the previous upset, the Lopes' Women's team fell to Michigan-based Alma College, 2-0, ending their season.
Meanwhile, the Lopes' Men's team lost two games in pool play to Wright State University, who eventually went on to win the championship, finishing at 4-2 and earned a first-round bye entering the double-elimination bracket.
In their first matchup, the Lopes lost, 3-1, in a best-of-five series with Adrian College (Michigan), sending GCU to the Contender's Bracket.
It was "do or die" time for the Lopes as they competed against the No. 2 seed, the University of Wisconsin Whitewater, in a best-of-three series. Unfortunately, the Lopes' Men's team lost, 2-1, ending their run and finishing in 13
th place.
"Overall, they had the fifth-best total pin fall during qualifying, which is an impressive accomplishment," said Canfield. "Although it wasn't the way the team wanted to end the season, the team should be proud of everything they accomplished this season."
