GCU Wrestling hosts first meet since 2016

Lopes put 3 women, 6 men on mat to face 2 teams

The Grand Canyon University Wrestling teams hosted a meet in the Canyon Activity Center over the weekend, welcoming in Ottawa University and the University of California Santa Barbara. It was historic for the Lopes, since GCU hadn't hosted a wrestling meet of any kind since the Lopes' NCAA Wrestling team stopped the program seven years ago.

"The environment was great," said GCU wrestler Samantha Tuttle. "You could feel the energy of the home crowd and that helped motivate us."

Considering the success of the event, the team says they would like to continue to host home meets in the future.

Now the Lopes prepare to battle their way to the National Collegiate Wrestling Association Tournament, held in Puerto Rico on March 9, 10, and 11.
