After getting two wins in unconventional fashion Saturday, the
Grand Canyon University Men's Rugby team remains ranked No. 12 in the sixth Goff Rugby Report Men's D1A Rankings this week. It's the third straight time that the Lopes have found themselves in 12
th after enjoying a top-10 preseason ranking by Goff in January.
The consistent national ranking is testament to the respect the Lopes have earned in their first year unaffiliated with any conference, and the undertaking of a murderous regular season schedule. The Lopes got back over the .500 mark this past weekend in strange fashion, since they expected their final regular season home opponent to be the University of New Mexico, but sporadic communication from the Lobos eventually resulted in UNM declining to make the trip on short notice and a Lopes' forfeit win. GCU scrambled to preserve the date (and their Senior Day festivities along with it) by scheduling the Red Mountain Rugby Club from Mesa, which gave the Lopes (4-3 overall) a stern test in a 55-34 Lopes victory.
All that remains for the Lopes now on their regular season schedule is a date in San Diego, California, 10 days from now against an old California Conference foe. The Lopes will face off against San Diego State University on Saturday, March 25, then await word as to their playoff fate. The 2023 USA Rugby 15's Round of 16 commences postseason play April 8.
