Opening the 2023-24 regular season facing both of their archrivals right off the bat, the
Grand Canyon University Women's Rugby team turned the first rival away in dominant fashion with a 59-3 victory over the University of Arizona Saturday afternoon in Tucson. It was the second straight win over the Wildcats in as many seasons, and the Lopes' 3
rd victory in 5 overall regular season meetings between the two programs.
Both last year's scoring leader,
Angel Lucero, as well as junior forward
Angelique Schrock led the Lopes with a pair of tries each, but the balanced effort also saw
Alizah Yrigolla,
Samantha Garcia,
Lauren Campbell,
Atley Boyd and
Janice Dykes find the try zone before the final horn. Garcia and
Bianca Curtis combined to score on seven of the nine two-point conversions.
The Lopes will break the seal on the home side of the regular season schedule this Saturday, February 3, facing Arizona State University at
GCU Soccer Stadium on the GCU campus. Kickoff is scheduled for 6PM.
