With the remnants of GCU's Fall Break evident in the lack of bench help Monday night,
Grand Canyon University Women's Club Basketball Team 1 looked like it didn't even notice, rolling from the opening tap in a 77-49 victory over Park University JV at the
Canyon Activity Center on the GCU campus. The win kept the Lopes perfect in their first two games of Arizona Women's Basketball League play and kept them in a tie atop the standings with one week left before the semester break.
Thanks to many of their players not having classes resume until Tuesday morning, the Lopes' pregame huddle featured just eight members of the 14-player roster, but
Lopes' Head Coach Josh Braun needn't have worried. GCU freshman
Aliya Quintana set the tone by exploding for 13 first-quarter points as the Lopes raced out to a 26-9 edge after one frame. It wouldn't get any better for the Buccaneers as the combination of Quintana,
Aubree Evans and
Maggie Hobson combined for 21 of GCU's 25 points in the second period, and the 51-22 halftime advantage ended any suspense about the outcome.
Quintana finished with a game-high 22 points, but she had plenty of help as Evans (15 points), Hobson (11) and
Mia Brown and
Presley Blommers (10 points each) picked up the slack for the missing roster numbers.
Team 1 is now off for the rest of the fall semester, but both GCU Team 2 and Team 3 will help close out the fall half of the AWBL schedule next Monday, December 9. Team 2 will battle Arizona Christian University Development's Team 2 at 6PM, while Team 3 will take center stage for a 7:30PM matchup with ACU Team 1. All games will be held at the CAC, and admission is FREE.
