For a team located just a five-minute drive from the happiest place on earth, Disneyland, the 90-minute odyssey at the
Canyon Activity Center was anything but happy.
Anaheim-based Stanton University got a rude welcome to the campus as Grand Canyon University Men's Club Basketball Team 1 dominated from the opening tipoff in a 91-65 win Tuesday afternoon. The game was part of a rare two-game doubleheader that saw the Lopes defeat GCU Team 5, 84-33, just hours later in conference play.
The Lopes were led by
David Black, who scored 34 points while making six three-point shots and adding twelve assists. Lopes' newcomer
Jack Allen – a transfer from SAGU-Texas - was also a big contributor with 16 points on four three-point shots.
Building on a 45-34 halftime lead, the Lopes' ability to create steals on defense, and drain eight treys in the 2
nd half alone allowed them to cruise to victory.
"This was a good win against a quality junior college program, and it helps us gear up for some tough games ahead - with Arizona Western, Cochise, Scottsdale, and Pima all coming up," said
Lopes' Head Coach Lamont Lane. "We've got our work cut out for us but wins like this build confidence."
The Lopes play again on Tuesday, December 10 in the CAC against Ottawa University at 5:30PM, then go on the road against Arizona Western College and Cochise College.
