The
Grand Canyon University Women's Rugby team posted its highest scoring mark in nearly a calendar year, finding the try zone 10 times in a lopsided 64-0 shutout of University of California-Santa Barbara Sunday morning at the
GCU Practice Soccer Field on the GCU campus. It's the Lopes' second straight shutout and have allowed just three points in three matches this season. It was also GCU's fourth straight win over the Gauchos – dating back to the 2020 season.
The Gauchos didn't have to wait long to find out how potent the opponents' offense was, since GCU's
Bianca Curtis found the try zone just three minutes into the match, and the Lopes stayed on UCSB's side of the field nearly the entire day. GCU freshman forward
Maya Littell enjoyed her biggest day as a Lope, scoring twice in the first half and once in the second to record her first career 'hat trick'.
Samantha Garcia and
Kat Bambrick crossed the try line twice each, with Curtis,
Kloe Williams and
Joanne Marie Alvarez each scoring once. Garcia booted seven successful two-point conversions in 10 attempts.
GCU's Samantha Garcia lines up for a two-point conversion.
The Lopes will put their unbeaten streak on the line as they continue their current four-match homestand next Saturday, February 17
th at the GCU Practice Soccer Field as they host perennial powerhouse Brigham Young University. The Lopes will try to beat the Cougars for the first time in six attempts. Kickoff is scheduled for 11AM, and admission is FREE.
