GCU Men's Club Basketball's trip across town on Monday night was a productive one, as they took down Arizona Christian University, 58-50, in the ACU Event Center for the championship game of the Arizona Collegiate Basketball League. The Lopes claimed the league title for the second year in a row, having overcome PHH Prep last year, 57-50.
GCU started hot in the game, jumping out to a 14-2 lead thanks to Lopes' sophomore
Uriah Stokes [18 points, 8 rebounds] getting into a rhythm driving to the basket. Stokes' scoring - combined with the stout rebounding and interior defense of GCU sophomore
Harrison Fletcher [11 rebounds, 5 blocks] - left the Firestorm trailing at halftime, 30-15.
ACU opened the second half much differently than the first, showing renewed energy after seeing some outside shots fall. Cutting the GCU lead to three points by the halfway mark of the second half, the Firestorm threatened to completely flip the momentum before the Lopes shut the door – due in part to the playmaking of GCU junior guard
David Black [10 points, 13 assists] and a scoring punch off the bench in junior
Izayah Elize [10 points]. A breakaway dunk from Lopes' freshman
Kaden Manna capped off GCU's night and the ACBL season.
Next up, the Lopes start preparing for National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association National Championships. After nearly winning the 2022 NIRSA National title, the team is set to try again in Madison, Wisconsin on April 12-14.
