Grand Canyon University Women's Club Basketball Team 1 rallied from a pair of double-digit deficits against undefeated Bella Vista College Prep Monday night, but couldn't complete its final comeback in the end of a 68-64 loss at the
Canyon Activity Center on the GCU campus. The loss dropped the Lopes to a 5-4 mark in Arizona Women's Basketball League play and kept them in a tie for 3
rd place with Park University JV Team 1, who lost their AWBL game earlier in the evening. The Lopes now trail BVCP by four games in the AWBL Standings with 11 days left in the regular season.
The Lopes' first comeback came midway through the 2
nd quarter after the Bears built a seemingly insurmountable 29-12 lead. Lopes' Head Coach Josh Braun adjusted his offensive strategy to emphasize shots closer to the hoop, and it worked as the Lopes stormed back to trail, 33-30, at halftime. The next 12 minutes were nip-and-tuck as the Lopes stayed within range until finally taking a 53-51 lead with eight minutes play. That's when the GCU offense went cold, allowing the Bears to run off the next 11 unanswered points to take the lead for good.
GCU grad student
Taylor Hibicke's hot outside shooting helped give the Lopes the 4
th-quarter lead, and she finished with a game-high 22 points, while
Daniella Lopez – in her first game back in nearly two weeks due to injury – added 15 points.
Daniella Lopez drives against Bella Vista's Gal Ravi Monday night.
Both of GCU's AWBL teams were scheduled to return to action this Saturday, February 10 at 9AM, but Team 1's game with Park University JV Team 2 was forfeited by the Bucs and will be credited as a GCU win. GCU Team 2 will be on the court at 9AM Saturday against 2
nd-place Arizona State University Club. All games will be held at the CAC.
