GCU Men’s Club Volleyball splits 6 matches in first tournament of season

Lopes go 3-3 at SCCVL Crossover Tournament in California

The Grand Canyon University Men's Club Volleyball regular season began this past weekend in Seal Beach, California, with a split of six matches against different California universities at the Southern California Collegiate Volleyball League Division Crossover Tournaments this past weekend.

The Lopes began the weekend losing two of three matches at Saturday's North Division Tournament, getting swept by Cal-State Northridge, going to a 3rd set with University of California-Riverside before prevailing, 15-11, in the final frame; then losing, 25-19, 25-22 in a hard-fought match against San Diego State University. Despite a slow start to Sunday's South Division Crossover, dropping their morning match to UC Santa Barbara in straight sets, the Lopes used the Saturday education well and finished strong, again going to a 15-11 3rd set to beat University of California-San Diego in their middle match before getting their first sweep of the season in the final match of the weekend, 25-18, 25-23 over UCLA.

The Lopes have a month off before their next SCCVL assignment: the SCCVL Central Division Tournament, which will be held March 9 and 10 at the Canyon Activity Center on the GCU campus.
