In a match that saw the squad score on all but one of its first-half drives, the
Grand Canyon University Women's Rugby team throttled San Diego State University, 73-7, in its regular season home finale at
GCU Soccer Stadium on the GCU campus Saturday morning. It was the Lopes' 4
th consecutive victory and set a record for the program for regular season wins in a single Spring 15's season as the Lopes moved to 7-1 on the year.
The outcome's suspense evaporated almost immediately as the Lopes methodically marched down the pitch every time they saw the ball. Even though only playing for the first 26 minutes before leaving with an injury, GCU's
Micaiah Thornton set the tone with a pair of tries in the match's first 15 minutes. Thornton got plenty of help, since eight different Lopes found the try zone before halftime, including long scoring runs by
Angel Lucero,
Amaya De La Cruz and
Lauren Campbell, who took an SDSU kickoff and sprinted straight through the Aztecs' line nearly untouched en route to a score. The Lopes led, 56-0, at the intermission, and only an Aztecs' breakaway midway through the 2
nd half spoiled the shutout.
Savonna McGlothan breaks free during the 1st half of GCU's 73-7 win over SDSU
Lucero doubled her season's scoring output with her first 'hat trick' (three tries) of the year, both Thornton and Campbell had two tries apiece, and
Kloe Williams,
Alizah Yrigolla,
Savonna McGlothan,
Samantha Garcia and
Janice Dykes all found the zone once each.
The Lopes will now get a month off to prepare for the College Rugby Association of America's Western Regional Championships, which the Lopes will host for the first time April 19 and 21 at GCU Soccer Stadium. Times and opponents will be determined in a matter of days.
