The
Grand Canyon University Men's Rugby team led from start to finish in an impressive 48-17 victory Saturday over 20
th-ranked Texas A&M University at College Station, Texas. The 15
th-ranked Lopes snapped a two-game losing skid with the win, and put themselves back over the .500 mark overall with a 4-3 record. The meeting was the first ever between the two schools.
Just as in their previous wins, the offensive balance was a huge plus for the Lopes on the day. GCU spent most of the day in Aggie territory, breaking through in the 14
th minute on
Juan Felan's 4
th try of the season, then adding a try every 6-10 minutes from then on.
Jackson Gray, Texas native
Gene Kendall and
Sam Howard helped stake the Lopes to a 26-0 halftime edge, then
Jesse Emerson,
Charlie Marshall and
Ben Saunders (with his team-leading 5
th try of the campaign) put the match out of reach with tries in the first 25 minutes of the 2
nd half. The Lopes' defense was stout, not allowing the Aggies to score until the 70
th minute of the match. Saunders – who grew up a little over an hour from College Station in Fulshear, Texas - was also 4-for-8 in 2-point conversions for the Lopes.
With the road side of their 2024 regular season schedule now in the books, the Lopes turn their attentions to yet another nationally ranked opponent they've never faced before: Mount Saint Mary's University from Emmitsburg, Maryland. The Lopes will square off against the 16
th-ranked Mountaineers this Saturday, March 9 at
GCU Soccer Stadium on the GCU campus. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:05PM, and admission to the match is FREE. The match will also be televised by
The Rugby Network.
