Panama City, Panama – The international competition streak continues for the Grand Canyon University Powerlifting team.
Lopes's Head Coach Dawson Aaron and sophomore lifter
Marcelo Chanaba both secured first-place finishes in their weight class at the 19th Annual International Powerlifting Federation/North American Powerlifting Federation North American Regional Bench Press Championships in Panama City, Panama.
Aaron led the way on the platform — securing first place in his division by a commanding 30-kilogram margin — while Chanaba battled his way to a dramatic victory in the 66kg university class.
"Leaving so late and having a 14-hour travel day was a little fatiguing," said Aaron. "Being in a new environment was unique, but with this being my 4th international competition, I kind of knew what to expect, and that helped me execute my lifts."
Chanaba, who also trains under Aaron outside of the GCU Powerlifting practices, demonstrated impressive focus on the international stage, going back-and-forth with Canada's Seung Wong Lee in his weight class. Eventually, it was Chanaba that was able to add .5kg to his final attempt to secure gold with an 147kg bench press.
"Marcelo's prep the last few weeks was really encouraging," said Aaron. "He was very dedicated. He knew it was going to be a tight competition and did an excellent job controlling what he could control – despite being in a new environment on a large stage."
Looking ahead, the team will take on the Powerlifting America Arizona University Cup on December 6 in Glendale, but Aaron also has lifters focused on more international competitions.
"We're taking 8 lifters to USA Powerlifting Bench Press Nationals in January," said Aaron. "It will be a great opportunity for some of those athletes to try and get a bid for the next international competition like Marcelo and I got in Panama."
And for Chanaba? Aaron hopes this is just the beginning of a big year.
"I want him to celebrate the victory but also recognize the momentum that he has going right now," said Aaron. "For the rest of the club, I hope they see what the effect consistent hard work and dedication can have on their lifts and then see where it can take them."
