Owning the Corner.
In their final tournament of 2025, three members of the
Grand Canyon University Club Archery team found places in the top 6 of their respective categories in the two-day 2025 Corner Cup at the Ben Avery Indoor Shooting Facility in north Phoenix.
Lopes' Student Leader Makayla Dickey reached the winner's circle in Women's Bowhunter, fellow Lopes' senior
Jessie Hannemann finished just out of the top spot with a 2
nd-place finish in the Women's Barebow category; and Lopes' sophomore
Grant Gamez set a new personal best as he finished 6
th in the Men's Bowhunter division.
"Jessie and Grant both reached goals they were shooting for, which was awesome to see," said Dickey, who also finished in the top 25% of the field at the 2025 3D Turkey Shoot in Nevada City, California, two weekends before this tournament. "I won my division, which was great, but I wasn't as thrilled with my performance as I hoped. The bottom line, though, was that I was proud of what we all accomplished, and we had fun, which were the most important things."
Dickey was easily the most consistent archer in her category, never shooting less than 281 in any of the four rounds of the tournament. Her finishing score of 1162 was over 50 points better than her nearest pursuer. For Hannemann, she recovered from a rough first round to overtake three other competitors that were within 30 points of her finishing score of 847 at the end. Meanwhile, Gamez's final two rounds were identical scores of 254, which got him to a personal-best 1000.

The accomplishments of the three set the tone as the Lopes prepare for their annual trip to the world's largest archery tournament, Vegas Shoot 2026, in late March.
All three will be making a return trip to Las Vegas, Nevada, for the tournament, and will be joined by several other Lopes' archers. The team's final tuneup for that tournament happens over Valentine's Day weekend at the Phoenix 600.
