His last name is difficult to pronounce, so his family and friends call him "J.R.".
Much easier to pronounce than Barczyszyn? "All-American."
Grand Canyon University Men's Bowling incoming freshman Jerrad Barczyszyn (pronounced "bar-CHI-shin") will head down Highway 93 to the GCU campus in a little over a month with a lofty title added to his resume' after being named to the Dexter Bowling High School All-American team. The North Las Vegas, Nevada native was one of just ten high schoolers (a five-person men's and five-person women's team) from around the country to earn the prestigious honor. Barczyszyn's written essay and resume' of his bowling and academic achievements were one of hundreds that the Dexter Bowling Selection Committee sifted through to narrow the field down to 10 people.
Applicants had to have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average to even be considered, but Barczyszyn easily blew past that with a 4.0 (and weighted 4.95) GPA for his four-year career at Shadow Ridge High School. He's already had a head start on his college diploma as a dual-enrollment student at both Nevada State University and the College of Southern Nevada while earning an Advanced Honors diploma. On the lanes, he was just as strong as a two-time Bobby McVey Nevada High School MVP champion and two-time Nevada Prep All-Southern First Team Bowling selection. He also won the Nevada State Pepsi Championship as a junior and the Nevada 5A State title this past spring while also notching several wins on the Junior Bowlers Tour.
"It's awesome to have a young man coming into our program honored in this way,' said Barczyszyn's new coach,
Lopes' Head Bowling Coach Ben Canfield. "We're confident Jerrad will transition well into our environment – both from an athletic perspective and as a great teammate."
Barczyszyn will arrive on campus in five weeks during GCU Welcome Week 2025, and will work towards a
Forensic Science degree while at GCU.
