Brigg, Vollmin hat tricks cap GCU Women’s Hockey’s four-game road sweep

Lopes outscore Wyoming, Colorado State 32-5 as win streak reaches 5

A defensive-minded 2-0 win on Friday in Wyoming became an aberration.

The onslaught came in Colorado.

The Grand Canyon University Women's Hockey team made its first road trip of the season a perfect one, sweeping a pair of Western Women's Collegiate Hockey League series at the University of Wyoming and Colorado State University this weekend. The Lopes (5-1 overall, 5-1 WWCHL) outscored their hosts by a combined 32-5 – capped by a 14-1 rout of the Rams Sunday afternoon in Fort Collins, Colorado – to run their winning streak to five games since the season-opening loss to Colorado. Lopes' sophomore forwards Abigail Brigg and Alyssa Vollmin each recorded a hat trick in Sunday's finale, and junior goalie Sydney Fornwald won all three of her starts – including the Friday shutout. In all, 15 different Lopes lit the lamp at least once during the road swing.

Thursday: GCU 8, Wyoming 3

The Lopes wasted little time getting the trip off on the right skate in The Cowboy State as sophomore forward Jennae Szucs found the back of the net just 89 seconds into the opener off a Brigg assist. GCU finished the period with a 4-0 edge – thanks to goals from Sophie Armit, Bridget Graybill and Hope Viskovicz, whose score chased Cowgirls' starting goalie Cheyenne Douglas from the game. Viskovicz added her second goal unassisted early in the 2nd frame, and junior forward Ava Johnson put the punctuation mark on the period with the Lopes' 6th score with 10 seconds left. Wyoming scored twice in the 3rd – once on the power play and once shorthanded – but the Lopes amazingly answered within 36 seconds each time, first on freshman forward Tayah Myhre's first goal of the season and then on Haley Gray's power-play goal. Fornwald made 12 saves in her first start of the season, while the Lopes peppered two Cowgirls' netminders with 75 shots.

Friday: GCU 2, Wyoming 0

Wyoming goalie Alayna Smith made the rematch a much tighter affair, stopping all 20 Lopes' shots in the first period and 56 of 58 on the night. GCU finally broke through 7:55 into the 2nd when Myhre converted a feed from sophomore forward Molly Price, and Vollmin doubled the lead less than five minutes later off a Graybill assist. That was all Fornwald needed, again slapping away a dozen Cowgirls' shots for her first shutout of the season – against the same program she blanked for her first career shutout in last year's season opener.

Saturday: GCU 8, Colorado State 1

Sophomore goalie Annika Olson returned to the crease Saturday in Fort Collins, and her teammates handed her a cushion almost immediately with four goals in a four-minute span early in the game. Junior defenseman Elizabeth Ramsey opened the scoring off an Emma Jack assist, Price followed 43 seconds later, Brigg converted a power play at the 6:00 mark, and Lopes' fans only had to wait another minute longer for Armit to give the visitors another 4-0 first-intermission cushion. Another GCU barrage ended the 2nd, with Myhre (extending her goal-scoring streak to three games) and Jack scoring within 77 seconds of each other, and sophomore forward Aliyah Finch and Vollmin picked up where they left off with scores in the first 2:37 of the 3rd. The Rams finally avoided the shutout in the last two minutes of play, but Olson finished with 20 saves, the Lopes killed off all six CSU power plays, and GCU outshot the hosts, 51-21.

Sunday: GCU 14, Colorado State 1

Fornwald got the call again for Sunday afternoon's finale, and the Lopes saved their biggest offensive output of the season for last. Viskovicz opened the scoring 3:46 into the game, and GCU ended the 1st period with a lead of – you guessed it - 4-0 on goals from Johnson, Brigg and Vollmin. Freshman forward Mylie Chesley scored unassisted early in the 2nd, Vollmin and Brigg scored 42 seconds apart midway through the period, and Vollmin completed her hat trick with 58 seconds left before Johnson added a power-play goal 32 seconds later for a 9-0 lead heading into the 3rd. Chesley's second goal 41 seconds into the final period and Brigg's hat-trick goal 35 seconds after that made it 11-0 before the Rams finally broke through at the 3:06 mark. Sophomore defenseman Taylor Zahalka then scored twice and Viskovicz added her fourth goal of the trip to round out the scoring. Junior defenseman Madeline Christoff set up four of the 14 goals, Fornwald made 32 saves, and GCU outshot CSU 70-33. The 14 goals scored was just one short of the Lopes' record for most in a single game (15 against Air Force Academy in January 2023) and was the team's highest offensive output since a 14-1 win over Wyoming in January of 2025.

The Lopes finally head home to AZ Ice Arcadia this weekend to host Montana State University in another WWCHL series, with puck drop scheduled for 7:45PM Friday and 7:15PM Saturday.
