Hoffman’s shootout goal seals GCU Roller’s perfect 4-0 Rhode Island weekend

Nabozny posts 47 saves, 1 shutout in 4 games as Lopes sweep East Coast trip

In only the 2nd trip to the East Coast in the program's four-year history, the Grand Canyon University Roller team looked very much at home at the National Collegiate Roller Hockey Association's Longplex Regular Season Event in Tiverton, Rhode Island, outscoring their opponents by a combined total of 19-5 in winning all four games. The Lopes began the weekend by battering Boston University's defense to the tune of 49 shots on goal en route to a 3-0 win, then showed no signs of fatigue later in the day in running away from both Neumann University (Pennsylvania), 6-0, and Quinnipiac University (Connecticut), 7-1. The Lopes capped off the weekend with a grind-it-out 3-2 shootout win over BU to end the second day.

Game 1 (Saturday): GCU 3, Boston 0

BU's mascot is the Terriers, which became appropriate not long into the matchup, since they spent most of the time chasing the Lopes around as GCU slapped 20 shots at BU goalie Jack Perry in the 1st period alone, with Tyler Larson finding the back of the net just 71 seconds into the game. Give Perry credit for staying stalwart, keeping the 1-0 score intact until early in the 3rd period – despite the Lopes outshooting the Terriers, 35-5, during that stretch. Perry and the Boston defense finally gave way in the final period as GCU's Cole Taylor and Conner Daniel scored goals within the first five minutes of the period, and the Lopes were never threatened after that. GCU senior netminder Michal Nabozny pitched a shutout with 14 saves, while Taylor and Daniel each had an assist to go along with their goals.

Game 2 (Saturday): GCU 6, Neumann 2

Pennsylvania and Connecticut schools didn't fare any better than Massachusetts universities against the Arizonans on Saturday. The Lopes scored even quicker against the Aston, Pennsylvania-based Knights, getting goals from Daniel and Zach Hoffman within the game's first 97 seconds – necessitating a change in goal for Neumann. Once again, the Lopes suffered through a 2nd-period drought (with only seven shots on goal), but warmed up again in the 3rd, with Kawena Lee lighting the lamp three minutes into the frame, then after the Knights got on the scoreboard a minute later, Daniel ended any suspense about the outcome with back-to-back scores within 48 seconds of each other. Lopes' senior Josh Little knocked in his first goal of the tournament with 11 minutes left before Neumann ended the scoring on a power-play goal with nine minutes left. While Daniel enjoyed a 'hat trick' in goals with a trio, both Little and Warren Jelinek did likewise in assists with three each. Nabozny grabbed his second straight win in goal with 11 saves.

Game 3 (Saturday): GCU 7, Quinnipiac 1

Getting only a little over an hour's rest in-between game starts, the Lopes showed little problems with the gas tank, cashing in a pair of their eight 1st-period shots on goal – courtesy of Daniel and Larson just seven minutes into the contest – then finally ending the second-period jinx with goals from Hoffman and Caden Paterno to enjoy a 4-0 edge heading into the 3rd period. By the time the Bobcats used a power play to get on the board in the 7th minute of the final period, Little and Lopes' senior Brydon Frisk had already put the game out of reach with scores, and Hoffman neutralized the Neumann goal with his second score of the weekend just 90 seconds later. While Taylor didn't score himself, he shared the wealth to the tune of four assists, while Frisk, Daniel and Larson pitched in two assists apiece. The Lopes' defense held QU to just 11 shots on goal, with Nabozny saving 10 of them.

Game 4 (Sunday): GCU 3, Boston 2 (F/OT/SO)

If the 8AM Eastern starting time (6AM Arizona time) against BU to begin the tournament Saturday wasn't daunting enough, the two teams had to finish off the weekend with a Sunday faceoff of 5AM Arizona time. The early time didn't affect the Lopes' intensity – since they fired 22 shots on goal in the first two periods – but it did affect their accuracy, since they stayed scoreless until Little broke the scoreless tie 21 seconds into the 2nd frame. A Jelinek penalty five minutes to the 2nd period gave the Terriers a window of opportunity, which BU's Daniel Cusack cashed in to send the game to the 3rd period tied at 1-1. GCU broke the tie with Frisk's second goal of the trip five minutes in, but BU responded again with the tying goal with just over two minutes left, and the teams headed to overtime. As if the teams weren't tired enough already, the four-minute overtime period proved fruitless, which set up Hoffman to be the hero with his gamewinner during the ensuing three-man shootout. Nabozny finished off his 4-0 weekend with a dozen more saves in 40 minutes of work, while Hoffman's score was his 4th of the weekend – second only to Daniel's five. Meanwhile, Taylor and Jelinek led the Lopes in assists with seven and five, respectively.

The Lopes now return to Western Collegiate Roller Hockey League play this coming weekend in Parker, Colorado, facing off against both the University of Colorado and Cal-State Fullerton twice each in the span of 26 hours on February 14 and 15. The Lopes' next home matchups happen February 21 and 22 at Solid Ground Arena in Peoria when they host the University of Arizona at 11AM and 4PM Saturday and then Arizona State University at 2PM on Sunday.
