The
Grand Canyon University Club Track & Field team delivered a solid performance at the CAC Indoor Invitational in Coolidge on Saturday, tallying 41 personal records and securing five national leading marks on the National Intercollegiate Running Club Association ranking list.
Â
Lopes' sophomore
Siena Burns once again headlined the women's side, showcasing her versatility by completing a grueling triple—the 600m, 800m and mile. Burns took victory in the 600m with a time that now leads the nation in NIRCA Rankings and finished as runner-up in the 800m.
Â
"Siena showed once again what a force she is on the track," said
Lopes' Head Coach Todd Lehman.
Â
On the men's side, Lopes' freshman
Elijah Triou continued his upward trajectory in the shot put. Triou secured the event win and solidified his position at the top of the NIRCA National Rankings for the second consecutive week.
Â
"Eli is improving on his PR every week," Lehman said. "His transition to the heavier shot (12 up to 16 pounds) - as well as moving from the glide to a rotational - is proving to be very successful."
Â
Fellow freshman
Victoria Brown also etched her name atop the national leaderboard. Despite competing with a broken thumb that prevented her from using starting blocks, Brown clocked a national leading time in the 60m hurdles, surpassing teammate
Lauren Metcalf, who still holds the second spot in the rankings.
Â
"Victoria had another strong day at the track," said Lehman. "Her broken thumb has not stopped her from showing that she is one tough competitor."
Â
Yet another Lopes' freshman,
Zach Cooper, finished as runner-up in the Men's Pole Vault, showing promise for his upcoming Heptathlon debut. In preparation, Cooper also competed in the 60m hurdles, 1000m, and high jump. He will be joined by teammate
Malakai Baier next week as they launch their collegiate careers as combined event athletes.
Â
In the jumps,
Dodie O'Reilly (you guessed it, a freshman) placed 3rd in the Men's Triple Jump for the second week in a row.
Â
"Once again, Dodie is proving that he is very close to a big jump," said Lehman, highlighting the competitive push from teammates
Jaden Smith and
Cobie Woods.
Â
The Lopes now hold five No. 1 marks in the NIRCA national rankings:
Women's 600m:
Siena Burns
Men's Shot Put:
Elijah Triou
Women's 60m Hurdles:
Victoria Brown
Women's Pole Vault:
Delaney Herr
Men's 4x400m Relay:
Malakai Baier,
Ezra Wildeman,
Andrew Reardon,
Evan Van Pelt
Â
"I keep saying it, but I am so grateful to have such an outstanding staff of coaches that are leading this great team on to so many fantastic performances," said Lehman.
