Nevada tops GCU Women’s Ultimate in 13th-Place Finals at USAU SW Regionals

Lopes can’t carry momentum of semis win over UCSD into final

After breaking through for its first win of the tournament just minutes before, the Grand Canyon University Women's Ultimate team couldn't match the same success in the finals of the 13th-place bracket of the 2026 USA Ultimate Southwest Division 1 Regional Tournament, dropping a 15-11 decision to 11th-seeded University of Nevada on the event's final day in Bakersfield, California. It's the second straight year that the Lopes were vanquished by the 11th seed of the tournament in their final match, having lost to Santa Clara University a year ago in the 10th-place match.

Plugged into the last of four pools in the 16-team tournament, the Lopes had to face the pool's highest seed, No. 4 University of California-Davis, right out of the gate, losing a 15-3 decision. The Lopes' next match was not only a chance to jump up in pool play for the Sunday brackets, but also a chance to avenge their championship match loss in the USAU Desert Division 1 Conference Championships weeks before to archrival Arizona State University. Unfortunately, the five-point loss to ASU in divisionals was duplicated by Saturday's 13-8 loss to the Sun Devils, dropping the Lopes into the 5th-place qualifier to end Day 1. The Lopes were slightly favored going into the matchup with 14th-seeded San Diego State University – especially after beating the Aztecs to begin the spring season as part of New Year Fest in January – but SDSU came out the aggressors in a 15-7 Lopes' loss.

Day 2 began with the Lopes in the 13th-place semifinals against UC San Diego – another team the Lopes came in to the matchup as the favorite. This time, the Lopes didn't disappoint, posting their highest point total of the season in a 13-5 victory. The offense awakened, the Lopes squared against Nevada, who'd been limited to just two points in their first match of the tournament, but had increased their point totals in each of their ensuing four matches. The Wolfpack continued that trend against the Lopes with a season-high 15 points in relegating the Lopes to 14th place.

The Lopes finish the 2025-26 with an 8-6 overall record and a New Year Fest title.
