Another year, another NCBA Division 2 World Series appearance. The historic has become commonplace for Kim Carpenter and his team as he begins his 7th year holding the reins of the D2 squad while being Rich Warnol's 'right-hand man' on the Division 1 side. The 2024 appearance was the Lopes' 3rd straight at the NCBA D2 World Series, with the first time being the most special, winning it all before returning to the World Series championship game the next year. Carpenter is a former NCAA Head Baseball Coach and was named as the NAIA District VII Coach of the Year in 1992. He has served in many different capacities in baseball as a scout and teacher of the game for over 30 years.
Carpenter started his college baseball playing career at New Mexico Highlands University, but that ended prematurely due to an injury. However, he rebounded to wrap up his eligibility on a golf scholarship at NMHU.
Carpenter then began his coaching career at NMHU. His 17-year tenure began as an assistant softball coach, then he moved over to head baseball coach for the Cowboys from 1990-1994. A near-fatal auto accident forced him to give up the coaching duties, but Carpenter rebounded well, becoming at different times the assistant athletic director, intramurals director, compliance director and even vice president at the school over the next decade. Carpenter spent his last year of college administration as the assistant vice president at the NMHU-affiliated San Juan College in Farmington, New Mexico.
Carpenter has also spent over two decades coaching club baseball, including founding and running his own club team, Fuel New Mexico, until 2018. Carpenter has also scouted for the Cincinnati Reds and Milwaukee Brewers, and spent 14 years on the executive committee of the prestigious Connie Mack World Series, even serving four years as the president and general chairman.
Carpenter has even spent 14 years in local government, first as the Deputy County Executive Officer for San Juan County in New Mexico, then moving up to County Executive Officer.
He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Master’s Degree in Human Performance and a Ph.D. in Education.
Carpenter teaches the game as it can be incorporated in life: teaching athletes to work hard to be better – on and off the field; to give back to what they have been afforded; and to remember to do the right thing always that will ensure their true existence of humanity.
Kim is married to his wife, Kristine, and has three kids.
