Not many assistant coaches at the club sports level can say they simultaneously hold one of the most prestigious positions in their sport nationally. Peter Wieging can. Named Technical Director of the USA Gymnastics Men’s Development Program this past January, Wieging oversees technical and judging standards for the next generation of elite men’s gymnasts across the country — all while entering his 2^nd official year on the GCU Club Gymnastics staff, a program he has helped guide to NAIGC Nationals the past four years, and coached them on that stage to two national individual titles… and counting.
 
Wieging’s gymnastics roots trace back to San Marin High School in Novato, California, before he headed to Arizona State University, where he became a nine-time All-American and helped the Sun Devils capture four USAG Collegiate National Championships as an athlete. After earning his Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science and Physical Education from ASU in 2001, he stayed connected to the sport as a coach — and went on to lead ASU to five more USAG national titles on the coaching side. He’s also been a women’s coach and/or director for over 20 years (in multiple stints) at Aspire Kids Sports Center in Chandler — GCU Club Gymnastics’ home gym.
 
Beyond the gym floor, Wieging has built an even more impressive reputation as a judge. A leader within the National Gymnastics Judges Association — where he has served as International Vice President — he has judged more than 40 national and international competitions, including back-to-back FIG Junior Artistic Gymnastics World Championships. On a personal note, Wieging has also built a successful career in real estate in the Greater Phoenix area, currently with Realty West LLC. Wieging, his wife, Tamara, and their four kids reside in Chandler.
