Lamont Lane enters his seventh year as the lead head coach with GCU Men’s Club Basketball and his eight year overall with the program, and begins the season with high expectations, since he just got done leading his top team to the NIRSA Men’s Basketball Championship crown last April.

Although he excelled at several sports growing up in Indianapolis, Indiana, Lane was most attracted to the game of basketball. After starring on the hardwood at Arsenal Technical High School in Indiana, Lane went on to play collegiate ball at East West University in Chicago, Illinois before transferring to Chicago State University as a walk-on in his senior season. A basketball purist at heart, Lane knew he wanted to stay involved in the game after earning his undergraduate degree. His first coaching gig came at Purdue University in Indiana, where he coached the university’s club basketball program from 2016-2018. Lane’s tenure with the Boilermakers was highlighted by a victory over the University of Pittsburgh in the 2017 NCBBA National Championship game — considered the ultimate achievement in men’s club basketball. Purdue went 15-3 in conference play prior to its hot postseason run.

Lane’s first season with GCU came as the head coach of Team Purple in 2019. One year later, he was named the head coach of GCU White, taking the reins from Lopes’ Director of Club Basketball Operations Matt Gordon. Lane steered the Lopes to a third-place finish in the NCBBA Southern Pacific East Conference in his first season at the helm. In the spring of 2020, Lane coached the GCU White team to the championship game of the NIRSA Region XI Tournament.

Lane, who earned his Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) in Sports Business from GCU and is now working towards his doctorate, has a simple coaching philosophy: Play fast, play hard, respect your teammates and respect the game.
