It’s Year #3 on the GCU Men’s Hockey bench for John Olver as the Lopes’ Associate Head Coach, and once again, he will use his wealth of ice hockey experience to try to help the Lopes to their 2nd straight ACHA National Championships berth.
Olver began his coaching career in 1981. As an assistant coach, he helped lead three teams to British Columbia Hockey League Championships. Then as a head coach, he’s won five Thorne Cup titles (Western States Hockey League), a Kelly Cup (East Coast Hockey League) and a Taylor Cup (Western Collegiate Hockey League). Olver has also led 14 teams to their championship finals in 25 years as a head coach and has won four coach of the year awards. Along the way, Olver has been a president and/or general manager of minor league hockey teams for the Dallas Stars and Edmonton Oilers, and as a player, was drafted by the Colorado Rockies while still at the University of Michigan.
Since the 2018-19 hockey season John has also served as the head coach of Northstar Christian Academy in Alexandria, Minnesota, and has led the national coaching development program within the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Hockey organization.
