Matthew Miller had a choice to make as a young athlete coming out of Ellwood City, Pennsylvania — chase a hockey career at Michigan State University or follow the diamond. He chose baseball, spending two years in the minor leagues in the Pittsburgh Pirates and Houston Astros organizations before eventually trading the dugout for the desert. Miller moved to Arizona at 21 and never looked back as he commences his 4th year as head coach of the Lopes’ Division 3 Hockey program.
Once in the Valley, Miller found his way back to the ice — and stayed there. He played hockey here for 21 years - developing a deep connection to the sport he had set aside in his youth - and went on to share that passion as a coach with the Flagstaff North Stars before joining the GCU Club Sports family.
On a personal note, Miller’s connection to GCU Club Hockey runs in the family, since he is the father of (and works closely with) GCU Women’s Club Hockey Head Coach Reid Miller.
