3rd time around for Matt Johnson with GCU Club Triathlon as he begins his 3rd year as a Lopes’ Assistant. When the original organizers of the program, twin triathletes Jake and Nick Windauer, graduated in 2020, Johnson, who was beginning his sophomore year at GCU, stepped up to become student co-head coach with Lauren Roe. Johnson helped navigate the team through the tough times of the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. When Johnson graduated in 2022, he left knowing he and Roe had led a full contingent of Lopes to participate in the USA Triathlon National Championships in Georgia that spring.

Johnson, who spent all three years of his Lopes’ college stint competing for GCU Triathlon, first began his quest to become a triathlete a decade ago in his hometown of Snohomish, Washington near Seattle.  He then became the team captain for the Henry M. Jackson High School Swim team for his senior year and spent three years running cross country for the Timberwolves.  He also began his coaching career in nearby Bothell, Washington, coaching swimming for a year at the McMenamins Anderson School pool. Since graduating, Johnson has taken the AZ State Cat 2 Mountain Bike title, and races Cat 3 Road.

Johnson moved his tassel over during GCU Spring 2022 Commencement with a bachelor of arts degree in Business Management with a minor in Marketing, and returned to campus in April 2023 to join the GCU Admissions office as an Admissions Counselor.
