Kyle Speed begins his fourth year as head coach for Grand Canyon University Women’s Club Basketball. Originally from Seattle, Washington, Speed graduated from GCU with a Bachelor’s in Sports Management, and currently works at GCU as a university admissions counselor.
Speed has an extensive player and coaching resume’. He attended Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas from 2007-10. During his time at JCCC, Speed was selected as First Team All-Region and twice was an All-Jayhawk Conference Honorable Mention selection. Speed was also selected as a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Preseason All-American. In the 2008-09 season, Speed helped lead JCCC to the NJCAA National Championship, ending his junior college career with a total of 876 points.
After his junior college days, Speed joined Grand Canyon University’s men’s basketball team – coached by Russ Pennell for the 2010-12 seasons. In his first season with the Lopes, Speed led the PacWest (and ranked fourth in the nation) in assistant/turnover ratio. He was named All-PacWest Conference Second Team after the season. In 2011-12, Speed was named All-PacWest Conference First Team and led the Lopes to the NCAA Division II Tournament.
Speed has previous experience in coaching and training high school, college and professional level with USA Basketball Gold certification. Speed has led the GCU Women’s Club Basketball team to berths in the AWBL Championship Game (twice) and the NIRSA Region VI title, as well as the quarterfinals of the NIRSA National Championship.
