Mark Nelson 2017 Headshot

Mark Nelson

It’s been more than 15 years since Mark Nelson stepped away from a basketball coaching career that took him from the courts of Kansas State University to the sidelines of the NJCAA Final Four — and into the company of some of the most celebrated players in NBA history. But the skills he built along the way — teaching, developing people, and building culture — have never left the building. As GCU’s Assistant Director of Club Sports since 2017, Nelson has been one of the quiet architects of what has become the largest club sports program at any university in the nation, and has also developed a leadership program that has become one of club sports’ most valued components.

Nelson grew up in Pittsburg, Kansas, played his prep ball at Pittsburg High School, and moved on to Independence Community College before landing at Kansas State, where he played guard for legendary head coach Lon Kruger. During his two years with the Wildcats — including the 1987-88 season alongside future Hall of Famer Mitch Richmond — K-State won 45 games, made two NCAA tournament appearances, and reached the Elite Eight. After earning his degree in physical education from K-State, Nelson moved into coaching, spending 11 years as a head coach at Cowley County in Kansas and Wabash Valley College in Illinois, where he accumulated 243 wins. His finest season came in 2001-02, when he guided Wabash Valley to a 32-6 record and an NJCAA Final Four appearance. The following summer, he was selected to coach the U.S. Junior National Team — a squad that included future NBA stars Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh, and Deron Williams — and he also served as the junior-college coach of NBA veteran Tony Allen.

In 2005, Nelson and former GCU men’s basketball head coach Russ Pennell co-founded the Arizona Premier Basketball Academy in Gilbert, which became one of the preeminent basketball training facilities in the Southwest. Nelson joined GCU’s athletic department staff in 2009 and has served as Assistant Director of Club Sports since that time, also earning his Master of Science in Organizational Leadership from GCU in 2013. In 2018, Nelson launched the GCU Club Sports Leadership Program, a student-athlete development initiative that has grown from 25 participants to nearly 140 in just eight years. The program’s reach has extended well beyond campus, as Nelson now speaks to audiences of high school students, college administrators, and families at GCU Enrollment events across the country.

Nelson’s faith and family are integral threads in his life. Nelson and his wife, Sherry, celebrated their 37th wedding anniversary this year. They have three kids, twins Cooper and Katie, both of whom have been part of the GCU program, and son Chase, who also attended GCU. All three are married, and have brought Mark and Sherry four grandchildren, who they dote on.
