GCU Women's Lacrosse stays undefeated with 2 blowouts

GCU women's lacrosse lived up to its No. 2 ranking with two more blowouts of California schools.

The Lopes moved to 8-0 on the season by pulling off a rare lacrosse shutout, 17-0, at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday and continuing the dominance with a 21-8 win at Long Beach State on Sunday.

GCU coach Tracy Gallihugh's squad is accomplishing this without a senior on the roster.

"I was very pleased and proud of the way the team played this past weekend," Gallihugh said. "Everything we have been drilling down in practice, they were able to execute perfectly in the games. Every game, they are getting better and better and that is all I can ask for."

GCU was elevated to the No. 2 national ranking in Women's Collegiate Lacrosse Association's Division II last week and looked the part with a 12-0 second half at Fullerton. Sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Paine, the national leader in saves, stopped seven shots to preserve the shutout while six Lopes scored goals. Junior attacker Kelsey Wood led the team with five while sophomore midfielder Brianna Healy had four, sophomore midfielder Lexi Ortt and junior attacker Meghan Payne each added three and freshman attacker/midfielder Casey Friel and sophomore midfielder/defender Madison Magoon scored one apiece.

A day later, the Lopes jumped ahead 4-0 at Long Beach State and stayed in control with Wood again leading the scoring attack with seven goals. Healy added six more goals with Friel scoring four and Ortt and Payne each hitting the net twice.

GCU is outscoring opponents by an average of nine goals this season (14.5 to 5.4).

The Lopes play Nevada-Las Vegas at 11 a.m. Sunday on GCU's Prescott Field.
