A rollercoaster start.
Â
After winning three of their first four games, the
Grand Canyon University Women's Lacrosse Team had a slow start to the home side of their schedule.
Â
After opening with road wins against University of California-Santa Barbara, University of Southern California, and College of St. Benedict, the Lopes got a rough start to their home season last weekend, losing to University of California-San Diego, 18-13, and Northern Arizona University, 19-11, over a five-hour span at
Prescott Field at the GCU Campus. The losses dropped the Lopes to a 3-3 overall record.
Â
January 28-30: GCU 19, UCSB 7, UCLA 20,
GCU 2; GCU 10, USC 6;
GCU 14, St. Benedict 5
Â
The Lopes began the 2022 season by playing four games in a span of 48 hours in Southern California.
Â
The Lopes' offense got the season off to a great start in their 19-7 win over UCSB Friday night. The Lopes then headed south to Los Angeles Saturday, falling to UCLA in a lopsided affair before bouncing back just hours later with a 10-6 victory over USC. The Lopes finished off the weekend a half-hour south in La Mirada, with an impressive 14-5 victory over St. Benedict.
Â
February 5th:
UCSD 18, GCU 13; NAU 19, GCU 11
Â
After the four-game trip in Southern California, the Lopes came home to host a three-team round robin tournament with UCSD and NAU.
Â
The Lopes broke out to an early lead against UCSD and held a small lead at halftime, but the Tritons' defense tightened in the second half. That allowed UCSD-led by Delainey Iles' five-goal, four-assist performance-to come from behind for the win.
Â
It was a similar scenario against NAU, as the Lumberjacks broke upon a close game in the fourth quarter.
Â
The Lopes head back to Santa Barbara, with four games in two days. Their next home matchup happens Saturday February 26th, against conference foe San Diego State University. First faceoff is scheduled for 5PM at
Prescott field.
