Longtime SLC rivalry. Another dramatic matchup.
The No. 25 Grand Canyon University Men's Lacrosse Team returned from California with a record of 1-1 on their first road trip of the season, beating No. 17 Chapman University, 10-8, before falling to No. 3 Concordia University Irvine, 14-13, in overtime.
Thursday: GCU 10, Chapman 8
It was a matchup that renewed a storied history between the Lopes and Panthers, since from 2015-2018, the Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association title game featured at least one of these programs (GCU won two titles during that stretch, Chapman one). GCU entered this game, though, on a two-game skid, trying to snap Chapman's two-game winning streak.
The action was even to start, with the game tied at 4-4 after the first half. Chapman then jumped out to an 8-6 lead with 10 minutes left to play, only to be met with a powerful response from the Lopes.
Saturday: CUI 14, GCU 13 (F/OT)
The Lopes capped off their brutal streak of nationally ranked opponents against No. 3 Concordia-Irvine. The Eagles, a perfect 5-0 entering the game, fell behind late in the fourth quarter, but CUI senior midfielder Jackson McKenney took over in the final moments, providing the game-tying assist to send the game to overtime and scoring the winning goal himself in the resulting extra period.
The Lopes now return home to host the University of Nevada-Reno Wolfpack this Saturday at 1:00PM at Prescott Field on the GCU campus.
