Phoenix, Arizona – May 7, 2026 – Ending the season on a high note.
GCU Men's Lacrosse rallied around its seven graduating seniors in the 2nd half of its final game of the season to beat UCLA, 12-11, at Colter Field on the GCU campus.
In what ultimately turned into a game of scoring runs, it was the Bruins that started first, leading 3-0 four minutes into the first quarter. GCU finally answered with their first goal as the opening quarter expired - thanks to senior
Marshall Moore.
Moore wasted no time scoring his 2nd goal - this time on an assist from junior attackman
Jaden Lawson. Lopes' transfer sophomore attackman
Damien Xiong then scored his 17th goal of the season to tie things up at three.
With both offenses now warm, the two teams began trading scores before UCLA created a 7-5 halftime lead.
The Bruins eventually widened to 10-7 by the end of the 3
rd quarter, continually responding to GCU attempts at closing the gap.
Then the Lopes finally put it all together.
"Going into the 4th quarter, I told the guys that our seniors only have 15 minutes of meaningful lacrosse left," said GCU Head Coach
Jeff Guy. "We need to step it up for them."
Step it up they did. The GCU defense smothered UCLA while the Lopes' offense poured in five straight goals to take a 12-10 lead by the three-minute mark of the fourth, including a game-leading fifth goal from Moore.
Adding to the late-game dramatics, the Bruins scored with 1:13 left in the game and earned another possession, but GCU freshman goalie Matthew Oversteg stonewalled the game-tying shot to cement Moore's fifth goal as the gamewinner.
Before the game, the Lopes honored their seven seniors:
Andrew Allegra,
Caleb Brager,
Cayden Cagle,
Cruise Clay,
Kai Cook, Kaden Hodgkinson, and Moore.
"Our athletes spend a lot of time working in our program, and it's a big commitment," said Guy. "Senior Day represents the accumulation of time, energy, and work that they've committed themselves to over the last four years. It's a mixed emotional experience - both a celebration of everything they've built but also sadness that they're moving on."
The Lopes end their season 4-6 (2-4 in the Southwestern Lacrosse Conference).
