The comeback effort was not enough.
Grand Canyon University Women's Lacrosse suffered a 19-14 loss to University of Arizona at the GCU Stadium this past Saturday. This game held extra weight as it was dubbed senior day and ultimately played a large role in post-season seeding.
The Lopes kicked off the day with recognition of the two seniors, Becca Leudemann and
Paige Loeffler, with pregame festivities before the action commenced.
UofA jumped out quickly on the offensive side with a score early in the first quarter. GCU responded with two scores of their own to secure the Lopes' first – and only – lead of the game. After a stretch of a back-and-forth scoring affair, the first quarter wrapped up with a 5-4 UofA lead.
The next three quarters told a similar tale, and the two squads continued to trade punches. The Lopes fought to keep the game within reach and cut the Wildcats' lead to one (13-12) late in the game.
During the last stretch of the fourth quarter, UofA pulled away and finalized a 19-14 victory.
"There were some really great things that happened on the field," said
Lopes' Head Coach Tracy Ramirez. "There was improvement in areas that have killed us in previous games such as transitions, defensive slides, draws, and offensive ball movement. At the end of the day our own inconsistency and mistakes lost us the game."
GCU sophomore
Mercedes Hough led the team in points with 3 goals and 1 assist, while
Catherine Taylor,
Ashley McBride, and Shay Smith also were key contributors with draw controls, groundballs, and goals.
GCU's journey is not over yet, they must wait to see what their playoff future holds.
"We will be working hard on having great fundamentals in high intensity situations as well as our consistency," said Ramirez. "We hope to get that 8
th seed in playoffs."
