Underdog GCU Women’s Lacrosse Makes Push at WWLL Playoffs

8th-seeded Lopes nearly upset #1 UCLA, reach 5th-place game

A true underdog story.

Entering the WWLL Division 1 Playoffs as the 8th and final seed, the Grand Canyon University Women's Lacrosse team reached the second day of the tournament, falling to No. 6 University of California Davis, 12-8, in the 5th-place game Sunday at Prescott Field on the GCU campus. The loss still gave the Lopes a 6th-place finish in the tournament, which was hosted by GCU (both the eight-team Division 1 and four-team Division 2 brackets) on four different fields this past Saturday and Sunday.

The Lopes weren't sure they were even going to make the eight-team field until early last week, and then faced the daunting task of opening tournament play Saturday morning against the No. 4 team in the nation, top-seeded University of California Los Angeles.

Despite entering the matchup as heavy underdogs, the Lopes stayed with the Bruins throughout before falling, 12-10, sending GCU to the consolation round and a matchup against 5th-seeded Santa Clara University. The Lopes staved off elimination with a 15-12 win over the Broncos Saturday afternoon before being eliminated by UCD a day later.

The Lopes finish the 2021-22 season with a 7-11 overall record.
