GCU Club Mixed Martial Arts Dominates at Phoenix Tournament

Lopes take home multiple first-place titles

Due to the pandemic, Grand Canyon University Club Mixed Martial Arts spent the last two years dormant in terms of competition, but on April 3 the program sent four athletes to compete at the Phoenix BJJ GI & NOGI Round Robin Tournament, securing two first-place trophies, one second-place trophy, and one third-place trophy. The hours of practice and training the athletes put in was finally showcased and left each member walking away with a medal in hand.

"Everyone showed up to practice, exhibited humility, and did not quit," said Lopes' Head Coach Sammy Sieckmann. "Regardless of the results, this is what a true martial artist does, and I am proud to bestow that title to all of our athletes."

The four GCU competitors combined for 16 total wins on the weekend, creating a strong name for GCU Club MMA after the long layoff from live competition.

"Being victorious comes after many struggles and defeats," said Sieckmann.
