With most of the four Lopes' participants making their first foray into the event, two members of the
Grand Canyon University Club Mixed Martial Arts team won at least three matches at the 2025 Jiu Jitsu League Phoenix IX No-Gi Tournament at Mullett Arena in Tempe. Lopes' sophomore
Owen Amble won four of his five matches in 154-pounds-and-under of the beginner white belt class, while Lopes' freshman
Jake Farmer went 3-for-3 in earning 17 points in winning the 141 & under category.
Farmer looked impressive in all three of his matches. The native of Fremont, California, beat Braylen Spencer on a submission, and hit double digits in points on both of his other victories, decisioning Alexis Viniegra, 10-4, and shutting out Gilbert Brito, 12-0, in earning the top spot on the podium.
Meanwhile, Amble – who hails from Spokane, Washington – bounced back from a back-and-forth tapout loss (in the final seconds of the match) to Joany Pena to post four straight wins. Close wins in his two middle matches were sandwiched between a 9-2 win over Fernando Diaz Luna and a grueling tapout win over Ricardo Espinosa that lasted into the final seconds of the match.
Amble and Farmer were joined by junior
Tristin Wendelburg and sophomore
Teagan Cummings – who both competed at the 168 & under class - as the Lopes' participants in the event. It was the most team members the Lopes had sent to a spring event in a couple of years.
