GCU D1 Men’s Hockey finishes season with 4-2 loss at UNLV

Lopes’ 13-14 finish easily shatters record for most D1 wins in single season for program

The Grand Canyon University D1 Men's Hockey team narrowly missed a historic chance to finish with a plus-.500 record for the first time in their four-year tenure on the Division 1 level as they lost to the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, 4-2, Saturday night in Las Vegas, Nevada. The loss completed a four-game sweep of the season series by the 2nd-ranked Rebels, and capped off the regular season schedules for 2022-23 for both teams. Nevertheless, the Lopes' 13-12-2 finishing overall record shattered the previous mark for D1 wins in a season (10) for the program.

While the Lopes never led Saturday, they nipped at the heels of the Rebels throughout the night. UNLV took a 1-0 lead into the 2nd period before GCU's Jacob Cummings took advantage of the Rebels being a man down and slapped a power-play goal past UNLV goalie Landon Pavlisin (on an assist from Triston Tabucol) to knot the game at 1-1 with 15 minutes left. The Rebels took the lead for good with two goals scored within 90 seconds of each other later in the period, but the Lopes made things interesting midway through the 3rd when Cummings set up Cameron Neaylon for a goal to cut the deficit to one. UNLV's Jayson Dimizio spoiled the Lopes' comeback attempt with a goal with 1:07 left to put it out of reach.

Cummings finished the year as the team's scoring leader in points (38), goals (15) and assists (23). Hunter Schmitz scored 10 goals in his last 10 games to finish second on the team in goals with 13, while fellow freshman Luke Busher capped off a strong first year of college hockey with 16 assists-more than half of those coming in the Lopes' last 8 games. Riley Morgan wound up the Lopes' top goalie, playing in 17 games and registering eight wins with a 3.79 goals-against-average and a save percentage of 88.7%.
