The Grand Canyon University Men's Lacrosse Team snapped a 6-game losing streak by beating No. 15 University of Arizona, 20-7, Saturday afternoon in their home finale at GCU Soccer Stadium. The win upped the Lopes' overall record to 3-7, while the Wildcats dropped to 6-3.
With the stadium as full as it had been all season, the nervous energy of the crowd could be felt as the Wildcats' offense got things going early, scoring back-to-back goals in the first three minutes of play. Despite this early outburst, the Lopes fired back with a season-high eight first-quarter goals of their own, highlighted by two goals each from Tyler Parietti, Cam Gilmore and Grayson Goodyear.
Arizona attackman Max Bergamo cut into the GCU lead with a goal early in the second quarter, but the Lopes again answered emphatically, adding five scores (including three more goals from Parietti), giving GCU a 13-3 edge as the halftime buzzer sounded.
A quiet third quarter for the Wildcats helped the Lopes put the game out of reach. Lopes' attackman Nick Whittall scored or assisted on three of the four GCU goals in the period, while goalie Jake Hives caught every close-range shot from an Arizona team desperate to get back within striking distance.
In the final quarter, some Lopes' second liners got to shine with Slater Simo, Liam Reid, and Marshall Moore all scoring. Parietti led all scorers with five goals, while Gilmore, Goodyear and Reid each had a 'hat trick'. Both Gilmore and Whittall contributed five assists each as part of the Lopes' 16-assist attack, a season-high.
"The fire and intensity that guys showed is what we've been needing all year," said GCU Head Coach Jeff Guy. "This was a huge win for the program because it keeps us alive for the postseason. More than that, it was great to get a win for our seniors who work so hard."

Lopes' seniors Gilmore, Goodyear, Whittall and defender Andrew Bollinger were recognized before the game began and made the most of the final home game by scoring at least a goal.
The Lopes will now make the trip across town to Tempe to take on Arizona State University this Saturday, April 15.
