The Grand Canyon University Men's Lacrosse Team got back in the win column by beating No. 12 San Diego State University, 10-8, Saturday afternoon in their season conclusion in San Diego, California. The win set the Lopes' season record in stone at 4-8.
"We continued to work and get better week by week this season," said GCU Head Coach Jeff Guy. "It was a great way to end the season and a great way for our seniors to end their competitive lacrosse careers."
The Lopes' defense - headlined by Pearl Lacrosse Goalie of the Week Jake Hives, who saved 27 shots in the game - shined early, holding the high-powered Aztecs' offense in check to head to the second quarter tied, 2-2.
The Lopes trailed, 5-4, at halftime, but then hung three goals on the Aztecs in each of the final two quarters to come from behind for the W. GCU seniors Cam Gilmore and Nick Whittall led the way for the Lopes' offense down the stretch and finished the game with three goals apiece. Whittall also had three assists, while Parker Setterfield, Liam Reid, Kyle Capshaw, and Grayson Goodyear all contributed one GCU score each.
"We finished the season with three top-20 wins, and two of those wins came against teams that were bubble top-10 teams all season long," said Guy. "We showed glimpses of who we could be as a team this season. Hopefully, we can use these wins as inspiration to work hard this upcoming offseason."
