GCU Club Golf places 2nd at NCCGA Spring Nationals

Lopes’ 3rd top-2 finish in last 5 appearances

West Lafayette, IN – For the Grand Canyon University Men's Golf team, the National Collegiate Club Golf Association Spring National Championships was about resilience.

"We played through some extremely tough elements," said GCU Head Coach Ryan Woodworth. "It was low 40s with high winds, rain, sleet, hail – you name it and we saw it. It was a true test of our character to be able to hang in there."

But for the Lopes, "hanging in there" wasn't what they flew across the country for. Overcoming a 10-stroke deficit entering the second and final round, the Lopes roared up the standings on Sunday, jumping five spots to finish 2nd, three strokes behind champion University of Tampa.

"We had some players that struggled on Day 1 and then turned it around on Day 2 to pick up for some of the guys who had the reverse happen," said Woodworth. "It was a complete team effort."

One of the Lopes' standout golfers was Lucas Hughes, who shot an even-par 144 for the tournament and finished in fourth place overall.

Other GCU notable performances include Antonio Bulgheroni and Dillyn Schmidke tying for 26th place - the latter of which played the whole weekend with an adjusted grip due to a broken finger.

This was GCU's third top-2 finish in the last five spring national tournaments and the highest they had placed since winning the title in 2018 (they finished 4th in 2022). The program's immediate future indicates this finish may be a springboard.

"With almost all of our players returning, we will be the team to beat in future championships," said Lopes' golfer David Charos. "We plan on bringing home some bigger hardware."
