Sean Waterman broke a 9-9 tie with back-to-back goals midway through the 3
rd quarter to help 17
th-ranked Cal Poly San Luis Obispo spoil the
Grand Canyon University Men's Lacrosse team's first-ever game played on GCU's newly renovated
Colter Field, defeating the Lopes, 15-12, Saturday afternoon. It was the Lopes' first loss of the 2024 campaign, evening their overall mark at 1-1.
Just like last week in their season-opening win against Utah Tech, the Lopes' offense established itself early, leading most of the 1
st quarter before the Mustangs caught them at 4-4 before the end of the period. The back-and forth battle stayed that way throughout the middle quarters until Waterman gave CPU the lead for good. The Lopes closed to within a goal early in the 4
th quarter, then went cold in the middle of the quarter, allowing the Mustangs to score three straight to put the game out of reach.
Lopes' junior attacker
Kyle Capshaw continued his hot shooting ways despite the loss, registering his second straight game with three goals and four assists.
Cameron Seymour and
Grant Warren contributed a pair of goals each for GCU, while Ryan Sanders paced the Mustangs with six goals.
One more game remains in the Lopes' season-opening three-game homestand, and that happens this Saturday, February 24, as they host 20
th-ranked University of Colorado at
GCU Soccer Stadium. First faceoff is scheduled for noon, and admission is FREE.
