After waiting until the month of February for its first regular season tournament, the
Grand Canyon University Women's Club Volleyball team played seven matches in the span of 30 hours this past weekend, winning three of them. The matches were part of two different Divisional Crossover Tournament in Southern California Collegiate Volleyball League play in Seal Beach, California.
The Lopes commenced play in the South Division Crossover Tournament Saturday morning with back-to-back losses to UC Santa Barbara and UCLA before ending the day with a split of two matches against UC San Diego (winning 25-22, 26-28, 15-11) and University of Southern California (a 22-25, 16-25 loss). The Lopes fared much better at Sunday's North Division Crossover, starting out the day with back-to-back sweeps over Cal Poly Pomona and Mount St. Mary's University before winding up the tournament with a three-set loss to San Diego State University that actually went extras in the final set before the Lopes fell, 17-15.
The Lopes will now get the chance to host an SCCVL tournament next month when the SCCVL Central Division Tournament will be held March 9 and 10 at the
Canyon Activity Center on the GCU campus, and both the Lopes' Women's and Men's teams will participate.
