Learning from a slow start the month before at the Santa Barbara Invitational, the
Grand Canyon University Ultimate team dominated opponents en route to an 11-5 victory over San Jose State University in the championship match of the 2024 USA Ultimate Sinvite Sunday afternoon in Henderson, Nevada. The win capped off a perfect 6-0 weekend for the Lopes and captured the team's first tournament crown of the 2023-24 season.
Â
It took little time during Saturday's pool play rounds to figure out who the dominant team was, since the Lopes were one of just two tournament squads (the other being Arizona State University in Pool A) to finish pool play unblemished. GCU breezed through Pool B with three straight lopsided victories over UC San Diego (10-4), Long Beach State University (12-2) and the University of Southern California (also 12-2) before getting its first stern test of the tournament in the final pool-play game, holding off San Jose State, 7-5.
The 4-0 mark gave the Lopes a first-round bye in Sunday's bracket play. In the semifinals Sunday morning, the Lopes showed their one-sided win over LBSU Saturday was no fluke, posting another double-digit victory, 13-3, over the Beach to advance to the title match. Another familiar foe waited in the form of SJSU, who upset ASU in their semifinal match. This time around, though, the Spartans couldn't contain the Lopes' offense as GCU's 5
th match of 10 scores or more brought them the championship trophy.
Â
The Lopes have now won eight consecutive matches, which is the team's longest winning streak since the 2021-22 season, and gives them plenty of momentum to head across town two weeks from now for the 2024 USA Ultimate Desert Division 1 Sectionals. The postseason event will be hosted by Arizona State University and begin April 13.
