Making the 50^th even more memorable.
 
Seven members of the Grand Canyon University Running Club earned age group medals at the 50th Annual Phoenix 10K, 5K, 1/2 Marathon & Marathon in central Phoenix. The contingent of nine Lopes produced five finishing times under 21 minutes and six top-50 overall finishes among the nearly 900 participants in the race.
 
"It was a hard course because it was uphill for the first two miles, then all downhill the rest of the way," said Lopes' Head Coach Anthony Vela, who set the pace for his charges finishing 10^th overall. "This is the first race for a couple of our runners, and it was good to see some of their parents come and support the kids during the race."
 
Freshman Luke Detter led the Lopes with a third-place finish in the M16-19 age group, clocking a chip time of 19:05 (four seconds behind Vela) to place 11^th overall among 875 finishers. Senior Gannon McShane was close behind, earning silver in the M20-24 division with a time of 20:38, and sandwiched in between the two were their two teammates, sophomore Caleb Lillo (20:19) and freshman Hudson Nichols (20:34), whose strong showings in the M16-19 group earned them top-5 spots in the age group.
 
On the women's side, Lopes' sophomore Isabelle Kristensen took silver in the F20-24 age group with a time of 23:42, while freshman Irelynn McShane earned silver in the F16-19 division with a 22:12 – a performance that finished off a memorable day for the McShane family, with Gannon and Irelynn both reaching the podium. Sophomore Kaylee Wettemann rounded out the medals with a bronze in the F16-19 group (27:49), and junior Justin Diaz Zapata claimed bronze in the M20-24 division (23:39).
