GCU Men’s Club Basketball Dominates Navajo Tech, 110-52

Sharpshooting leads Lopes to blowout victory

Big runs can change a game.

GCU had plenty of them.

The Grand Canyon University Men's Club Basketball team overwhelmed Navajo Technical University in the Canyon Activity Center on GCU's campus last Friday, 110-52.

The Lopes were led by freshman DeArian Land, who powered GCU's offensive attack with a game-high 27 points and 4 steals. Land, along with Larry Holmes, set the tone from the opening tip, pumping in 11 points in an early 2-minute span that staked GCU to a 21-5 lead that only widened from there.

Land, who normally comes off the Lopes' bench – took full advantage of the opportunity to start.

"The focus is that when the guys come off the bench, that's your opportunity to showcase what you can do," said GCU Head Coach Lamont Lane. "Because of injuries, DeArian was able to step in today and he had six threes in the first half. That comes from working and being ready."

Even with their hot start, the Lopes hit some rough patches late in the first half due to turnovers, but that didn't prevent them from pushing the halftime lead to 32 points.

The Lopes recovered their rhythm right after halftime with a series of big runs.

"The great thing about basketball is that anything can happen," said Land. "As long as we are in the driver's seat, we want to stay in the driver's seat."

The Lopes play next at 2PM on Saturday, January 3 at Phoenix College. GCU's next home game will be Friday, January 23 at 4PM vs The Academy Phoenix Prep in the Canyon Activity Center.
