GCU Club STUNT finishes season with two impressive wins

Lopes show season’s progress with one-sided victories over Ottawa, Arizona Christian

Growth sometimes comes in high-flying packages.

After spending the month of February getting an education in two tournaments from the stronger teams in the region – including the top-ranked squad in the nation, California Baptist University - the Grand Canyon University Club STUNT team demonstrated what it learned in the final two matches of the season, polishing off local rivals Ottawa University Arizona, 15-6, and Arizona Christian University, 11-2, at the two schools' home gymnasiums. The victories doubled the win total of last year's squad and ended the 2024-25 campaign for the Lopes with a 2-6 overall mark.

"When we participate in out-of-state games, we often encounter teams from higher division levels," said Lopes' Head Coach Alex Messana. "Conversely, these in-state games provided a platform for us to compete against teams of comparable skill levels, challenging us to showcase our mastery of STUNT level 1-4 routines. This progress highlights the rewards of our relentless efforts and dedication, and we are optimistic about the future growth of our program next season."

What had to be pleasing for Messana wasn't just the final tally on the scoreboard, but also the way that the Lopes got stronger throughout each match. The Ottawa match was nip-and-tuck throughout the first three quarters, with each squad scoring three points in the first half, and the Lopes clinging to a 6-4 lead heading to the final session – thanks to points scored in the final three jumps and tumbling routines of the 3rd. In the final quarter, the Lopes' combined routines came alive, scoring points in all of two of the final four routines, and outscoring the Spirit, 9-2, in the period.

In Glendale against ACU in an abbreviated eight-round match, it was much the same pace for the Lopes, who started slow, then pulled away at the end. With Lopes' Assistant Coach Faith Godfrey leading the way for GCU as Messana was out on maternity leave, the Lopes took a 2-1 lead after one quarter, then slowly shut out the Firestorm over the next two quarters before using their combined routines to again run away from their opponents, 5-1, in the final frame.

The good sportsmanship between the schools in Glendale was exemplified not just by the post-match handshakes, but that ACU honored not only their own seniors after the match and had GCU's future grads participate in the ceremonies with their families and friends as well.

"It is a poignant moment when the seniors transition to the next stage of their lives," said Messana. "This year is uniquely special as these seniors have been instrumental in the development of the GCU STUNT team since its inception. Through their hard work and perseverance, these athletes have built a lasting foundation for future teams. As their coach, it is heartening to witness the remarkable development of these exceptional young women from unassuming freshmen to confident and inspiring team leaders."
