GCU Hockey teams to temporarily find alternate “home ice” after storm

Roof damage, power outage forces closure of AZ Ice Arcadia following Saturday’s storm

Due to damage to their "home ice" of AZ Ice Arcadia over the weekend, the Grand Canyon University Men's Hockey and Grand Canyon University Women's Hockey teams are working to reschedule their home games for at least the next month. Storms bringing heavy rain and intense winds over the weekend caused power outages and damage to the building, and AZ Ice Arcadia officials are still working to assess the damage and begin repairs.

"AZ Ice has been a great partner for us over the years, and I know they're working hard to get this fixed and get things back up and running as soon as possible," said GCU Club Sports Director Dr. Dan Nichols. "Our coaches have been in constant contact with them over the past couple of days to try to find solutions."

The Lopes' D1 Men's Hockey team was finishing getting dressed for pregame warmups for its 2025-26 home opener Saturday night against archrival Arizona State University when an intense storm blew through the area, knocking down numerous trees in the parking lot of the Desert Palms Power Center (where the rink is housed) and causing power outages to homes and traffic lights over a wide area. The rink went dark near the end of the preceding junior hockey game approximately 45 minutes prior to the Lopes' scheduled puck drop. As officials called the rest of the juniors game and cleared the ice, building officials worked quickly to find the source of the outage, but couldn't restore power safely, forcing the Lopes and Sun Devils to postpone the game.

As Arcadia officials work to make repairs to reopen the facility, the Lopes' Women's Hockey team and the three Lopes' Men's teams are already rescheduling games at AZ Ice's two other rinks, AZ Ice Peoria and AZ Ice Gilbert. The game changes so far are below:
